Martin's Day

I remember the relief I felt at the time

learning about the struggles of civil rights,

about Martin and Malcolm and Rosa.

I was glad they had succeeded.

Now I sit, crouching down in my chair

sweat in the clenched fist of my prepubescent palm

as my entire class of prestigious prep-school students

join the teacher in looking to me

as we discuss why we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.
